ATHENS, Ohio (WOUB) — Following a disastrous season that saw Ohio go 14-37, Ohio has decided not to renew the contract of head coach Craig Moore. In his five seasons as the head coach in Athens, Moore went 108-148 with a mark of 77-89 in MAC play. Over the course of his final three seasons, his teams all suffered 30-plus losses and had a combined record of 51-99.
The decision to let Moore go comes after back-to-back-to-back seasons where the team failed to win 20 games. Moore was given the reins to the program in 2021 as the interim head coach after Rob Smith retired in January 2021. Moore won his first game as the skipper against Radford on Feb. 21.
Prior to being the head coach of the Bobcats, he was an assistant coach for eight seasons, serving as Smith’s right-hand man. Over the course of his time as an assistant coach, the program won two MAC titles in 2015 and 2017. Additionally, the Bobcats have had four players selected in the MLB Draft while Moore has been on the staff; mostly recently, LHP Joe Rock was selected 68th overall by the Colorado Rockies in 2021.
The decision to let go of Moore is something that almost certainly had to do with a lack of postseason success. Moore’s teams went 0-2 in the MAC Tournament with the only appearance coming in 2022.
During the 2025 season, the biggest weakness for Ohio was the pitching staff. An 8.30 staff ERA ultimately was something that sunk it over the course of the season. The offense posted respectable numbers, but it was not enough to lift the pitching staff that could not overcome certain deficiencies.
Ohio will conduct a thorough search for its next head coach in the coming weeks.
