A man reportedly took his own life after shooting a woman at the Beasley Mill apartment complex in Athens

UPDATE (8/7/25 5:31 p.m.): The suspect reportedly took his own life after law enforcement saw the suspect alive and attempted to get him to peacefully surrender.

UPDATE (8/7/25 5:16 p.m.): The crisis negotiator reports the the suspect is still alive despite him not responding to requests for contact. Officers are going into the building in an attempt to reach him.

Officials also say the victim was transported to Grant Medical Center in Columbus. Her condition is unknown at this time but she is reportedly communicating.

(UPDATE 8/7/25 4:35 p.m.) WOUB’s David Forster reports law enforcement officers could be heard warning the suspect they would break his windows before firing what is described as nonlethal shots at the windows at the time of this posting.

ATHENS, Ohio (WOUB) — A heavy law enforcement presence is at the scene at the Beasley Mill apartment complex in Athens after a man reportedly shot a woman.

Officers were seen entering the building at around 3:55 p.m to try to get people out before attempting to enter the unit the shooter was in.

A crisis negotiator could be heard trying to contact a man named “Joseph” outside of the complex at approximately 3:40 pm.

According to Athens Chief of Police Nick Magruder, the man reportedly shot the woman in the leg at around 2 p.m. The unnamed woman was transported to a hospital.

The man remains in the building and it is not known at this time how many others are still inside. The negotiator is repeatedly asking the man to call 911 to get in contact with him as he was not answering his phone.

According to its website, Beasley Mill is a low-income senior living facility.

Multiple agencies have responded to the scene. They are asking people to avoid the area and shelter in place.
