ATHENS, Ohio (WOUB) — The Bobcats knew that Ohio weather could change on a dime but did the Norse? Northern Kentucky (3-0-3) came to Athens to take on Ohio Women’s Soccer (2-3-1) for a rainy game on Chessa Field. Ohio showed out in last season’s meeting last year, giving this matchup dangerous pressure. After a physical match, the score read a 1-1 draw; the Bobcats first tie of the season.

The Bobcats start with possession from kickoff did not stop Northern Kentucky for taking early control with high intensity and pressure. After back-and-forth counter attacks, Northern Kentucky was the first to score with a back-post, left foot hit from Erykah Cornett in the 16th minute. Ohio lost momentum as the rain started to pour and the first half rounded out but, they held the Norse’ to only 1-0.

Trailing in the second half, the Bobcats refocused their mindset and pressure. Ohio held the majority of possession, with 16 total shots, eight on frame, only finishing on one. Sophomore, Iro Fakinou hit the tie breaker, also off the left boot, in the 69th minute. A few scrambles inside the six-yard-box were the closest attempts to tilt the score but neither team prevailed.

While a draw is not ideal for either team, Fakinou spoke positively about her team’s performance and the future match up against Indiana. Coach Rodgers was also proud of his team’s comeback, noting how physical the Norse played. He touched on lack of energy off the whistle and wanted to focus on shrinking the ratio between shots and finishes but was overall faithful for the future.

The Bobcats travel to Indiana University on Sep. 7 for a 1 p.m. kick off against the Hoosiers.

Northern Kentucky will compete against the Cincinnati Bearcats also on the seventh at 6 p.m.
