Ace Nation: Buckeyes complete three-set sweep over Marauders

NELSONVILLE, Ohio (WOUB) — The Nelsonville-York Buckeyes completed the sweep against the Meigs Marauders on Tuesday Night.

The Buckeyes started off the first set with an impressive five-point run, with help from Lexi Warren and Madi Pidcock’s offensive dominance. The Marauders fought to stay in the game, calling a timeout to stop the Buckeye offense. The errors caught up to Meigs, using only one timeout, the Marauders fell short in the first set, 25 to 15. 

 The Marauders were hungry for a win in the second set. A kill from Kyleigh Kraniyik set the tone for Meigs as they competed for each point. Buckeye Bailey Tomlin and Madi Pidcock clawed their way into the Marauder’s defense, each having back-to-back kills to force Meigs into a timeout, 10 to 7. Shelby Yost brought Meigs a new light with her demanding block. Although Nelsonville-York was keeping up with Marauder defense, the set was it cutting close. With Pidcock’s ace tying the set 22 to 22, Meigs called a timeout to break her serve. Tomlin forced the Marauders to still compete with a ferocious kill. The Marauders weren’t giving up yet, with a forceful block by Payton Kraniyik to tie the set, once again, 26 to 26. The Buckeyes responded with two powerful kills from Katie McKinney and Madi Pidcock, winning the second set 28 to 26.

Devastated with the second set loss, Jordin Davenport picked up her Marauders with two consecutive aces. Pidcock was bringing the power to shake Meigs with five kills before they called a timeout with the set being close, 15 to 14. Nelsonville-York did not let the timeout shake them, as their defense shined through Meigs’s defense, ending the set 25 to 16. 

The Buckeyes came into their home looking for a TVC-matchup win after a loss to another conference matchup against the Southern Tornadoes the previous night. With the offense blasting into the first set, it set the tone for the game. Pidcock and Tomlin ended the game with a combined 24 kills, putting pressure on the Marauders. 

Nelsonville-York Head Coach Wayne Dicken spoke about keeping composure throughout the game, “We’re a young team, the is a lot of our girls’ first time playing varsity volleyball this season. We feel like we’re capable of winning at this level at this point, halfway through the season. We were able to keep our composure and luckily, we were able to capitalize.” 

Junior Buckeye Bailey Tomlin also spoke about how the TVC win helps move the team forward into the last half of the season, “We let all the other games pass us by, we just come through stronger and motivate ourselves to be better than what we did last game.” 

Nelsonville-York hopes to bring another TVC win against the Wellston Golden Rockets on Thursday. Meigs will stay at home to play another TVC opponent on Thursday against the River Valley Raiders.
