Athens Service-Safety Director Andy Stone adds a new title to his long military career

ATHENS, Ohio (WOUB) — In his other life, Athens’ Service-Safety Director Andy Stone is a brigadier general with the Ohio National Guard.

And now he’s added another military title: deputy commanding general for operations for the 38th Infantry Division, also known as the Cyclone Division, which is headquartered in Indianapolis.

“Andy represents the 38th Infantry Division’s pursuit of talented, professional and committed warriors from our aligned states of Illinois, Michigan, Ohio and Kentucky,” said Indiana National Guard Brig. Gen. Joe Gardner, the division’s commanding general. “No doubt he will add instant value to the division’s warfighting readiness goals.”

Stone, an engineer officer with decades of National Guard leadership experience, said he is excited to work alongside military professionals of the 38th’s headquarters battalion and subordinate Midwestern units.

“I am absolutely humbled and honored to be selected as the deputy commanding general for operations of the storied Cyclone Division,” Stone said. “As the Army trains for future potential large-scale combat operations with a near peer competitor, the division is the primary tactical warfighting formation.”

Stone has led at every level from platoon to company, battalion and brigade level in a military career that spans more than 20 years.

Stone, a combat veteran with deployments to Iraq and Kuwait, commissioned from Ohio State University as an engineer officer. Throughout his career, he has earned the Legion of Merit, Bronze Star Medal, Meritorious Service Medal and Army Commendation Medal among many others.

Stone also thanked his family for their support.

“My wife, Tanyah, and I, and our entire proud military family, look forward to this next chapter,” Stone said.
