TRIMBLE, Ohio (WOUB) — Riding high on a seven-game winning streak, the Trimble Tomcats hosted an absolute thriller Thursday night against the Belpre Golden Eagles. After an incredibly physical and close game, the Tomcats beat the Eagles 65-51.
Starting off, the girls on the court outlined what the night’s game would continue to be; competitive, gritty, and full of fouls. Nine total fouls in this quarter and these players stopped play after play, keeping the score close.
Belpre’s Gracie Bills had a terrific performance, scoring seven of the 13 points her team would score. With a minute left in the quarter, the Eagles would take the lead at 13-12.
The Golden Eagles did not keep their lead for long, as the Tomcats began to wear down their opponent by keeping up their physicality. Another close quarter, the Tomcats were led by their Player of The Night senior Rilynn Fouts, making all four free throws she shot and scoring an additional two field goals. The half ended 28-24 Tomcats, and even this far in it was truly anyone’s game.
The effects of the fast-paced, hardcore play style of both teams became clear as the third period began. The Tomcats kept up their lead and solidified it, scoring 10 points more than the Eagles and only missing three shots during the quarter. A 47-33 lead by the Tomcats was dominant, but not infallible.
Fouls and scoring trends did not change as the game came to close. Both teams got six fouls each, and while the Golden Eagles continued to fight and never strayed too far from the lead, the Tomcats finished out strong and won 65-51.
This puts the Trimble Tomcats at 11-4 for the year and 4-3 in conference play. They will fight to continue their eight-game streak at Alexander on Monday, and Belpre will attempt to improve their record against Warren High School.
