POMEROY, Ohio (WOUB) – The Meigs Lady Marauders took on a strong defensive effort by the River Valley Lady Raiders. Fouls and turnovers would consume the Marauders, falling despite a late fourth quarter effort, 47-33.
The first quarter was an offensive struggle for Meigs, only able to connect for a few field goals early. They also got into early foul trouble, with River Valley collecting seven of their points off of free throws.
The Raiders got into a groove early, led by Zoey Mount who was able to find 11 points in the first. Their defense held strong throughout, holding the Marauders to only eight. River Valley leads at the whistle, 20-8.
The Lady Marauders would equalize their offensive scoring in the second. It would include a big three from Aladine Hysell to bring the lead back to 12. Meigs’ defense was also able to find their footing, holding the Raiders to only eight. The girls would go to the locker room with the score 28-16.
Turnovers was the story for the Marauders that would haunt them throughout the third quarter. A strong defensive effort by the Raiders would hold Meigs to only two points off of free throws halfway through the quarter.
The Raiders’ frequent offensive possessions led to many fouls early for Meigs, getting into the double bonus quickly, and allowing several free throw attempts for River Valley. Kaylin Burger would make her name known in the third, collecting multiple field goals to take her total to 10 points. By the end of the third, River Valley had extended their lead, up 38-24.
Meigs would not go down without a fight, with a dominant defense early in the fourth and a noticeable presence off the bench by Kolsyn “Cookie” Jenkins, momentum had swung into the Marauders favor. Unfortunately for them, it was just too much ground to make up and with a dagger three by Mount, the game had been sealed for the Raiders.
The final minute would be run down by River Valley and they would finish it off with two free throws from Burger, securing the win 47-33. Mount would lead the scoring for the Raiders with 14 and Peyton Kranyik would collect nine for the Marauders.
Meigs would fall to 2-16 and will face Jackson at home next week.
River Valley moves into a winning record, rising to 8-7 and will play Alexander on Monday.
