MCARTHUR, Ohio (WOUB) — The Nelsonville-York Buckeyes traveled to Vinton County Thursday night for a Tri-Valley Conference matchup. The Buckeyes had to play without their star player, Madi Pidcock, which proved to be detrimental to the team’s scoring ability.

Nelsonville-York won the tipoff, but Vinton County was quickly able to gain possession of the ball and score right away. The Buckeyes continued to struggle throughout the first quarter against the Vikings’ lockdown defense.

The Vikings were a force to be reckoned with on offense as well. Olive Booth, Zoie Nichols, and Trinity Williams lead the team in scoring; the three were unstoppable for the Buckeyes defense. After the first quarter, the Vikings led the Buckeyes 20-2.

The Buckeyes came out for the second quarter hoping to make a comeback, but an early injury to Josie Pallo hurt their momentum. The Vikings continued to runup the score before the half, and the Buckeyes started to really feel the loss of Pidcock.

Veda Stalder stepped up for the Buckeyes and was able to get a few points on the board for her team. At halftime, the Vikings led 35-10 with lots of excitement going into the second half.

Starting the third quarter, the Vikings’ Norah Martin put up a few more threes, going three for three from the line. The Buckeyes’ defense made some improvements from the first half, and Stella Petroff and Michaela Sommers had a few steals to help the offense, but they could not catch up to the Vikings’ thirty-point lead. Going into the fourth, the Buckeyes were down 54-16.

To end the game, Salder and Cam Jolley gave a final push for the Buckeyes, leading their team in points for the night. The Buckeyes fought hard throughout the whole game, but the Vikings played aggressively from the start and made it impossible for anyone to catch up.

The Vikings won 64-21 and are on the hunt for a win on Monday at Athens for another intense conference matchup.
