THE PLAINS, Ohio (WOUB) – The Athens Bulldogs hosted the Warren Warriors on Tuesday night to celebrate their senior night and attempt to improve their record as tournament season looms.

Athens began the night with an aggressive streak, showing they were here to play for their seniors. However, they found themselves in a vicious cycle of turnovers, allowing Warren to dominate on offense. Warrior Caleb Tullius would end the game with 13 rebounds, and combined with an additional seven by Blake Grimes, Warren would be able to capitalize on Athens’ missteps and end the first quarter 13-8.

The second quarter would see faster-paced play from both teams, but the tide would turn in the Bulldogs’ favor. Athens was able to take the lead, but Warren would almost immediately take it back after yet another steal. Warren’s momentum was slowed, but not stalled, and they’d continue to lead going into halftime 24-20.

Going into the second half, Athens came back with some new life, although that would once again be short-lived. They scored two field goals coming out of the half, but Warren would immediately bounce back and continue to put up point after point with little resistance from the Bulldogs. Athens’ biggest scorer would be Jaxon Warner, putting up ten points throughout the game, but Warren had an answer for each one. Warren was still hanging on 40-35, but there was hope yet for Athens.

Athens would continue their valiant effort, but after the same problems continued to plague both their offense and defense, they would eventually lose 54-44 to Warren.

The boys will attempt to improve their record as the regular season winds down against Nelsonville-York on Feb. 5.

Warren will face off against Belpre Feb. 10.
