Fort Frye dominates in cross-town rivalry

WATERFORD, Ohio (WOUB) — It’s once again the battle of the river, as Waterford hosts rivals Fort Frye in a physical battle. Fort Frye hasn’t beaten Waterford since 2021, and the Wildcats were looking to continue that streak. They ultimately fell short, as the Cadets dominated the Wildcats, 49-28.
In the first quarter, both teams struggled to get on the board at first. The first bucket didn’t come until three minutes into the quarter. Once the Cadets figured out their offense, the defense locked in. Only holding the Wildcats to six points. To close out the first quarter, Fort Frye’s Jantzyn Huck drained it right at the buzzer to give the Cadets major momentum into the second quarter.
The second quarter saw the Cadets continue to punish the Wildcats. Fort Frye’s three ball was too much for them to handle, as they would just keep making shots and driving into the paint. The score at half was 25-11, Cadets.
Coming out at half, Waterford came out prepared, led by Brynnlee Pottmeyer and Ava Hurley, who cut the lead down to single digits. However, a timeout by the Cadets helped them regain their momentum from the previous quarters. Fort Frye sent their lead back to double digits thanks to multiple turnovers by the Wildcats.
In the fourth, Fort Frye’s defense locked in. They forced many turnovers by Waterford that allowed their dangerous offense to produce. Allowing Fort Frye to dominate Waterford 49-28.
Next up for both teams is the playoffs; Waterford will play Ripley Union on Feb. 28 for the second round of playoffs. Meanwhile, Fort Frye will host Garaway on Feb. 21 for the first round of the playoffs.
