NELSONVILLE, Ohio (WOUB) — The Wellston Rockets traveled to Nelsonville-York Friday night to battle against the Buckeyes for a TVC-Ohio battle. The Rockets came into this game with a 16-4 record, and they definitely backed it up, winning 67-56.

Nelsonville-York won the tip-off, and the game was on. The Buckeyes came out strong and made powerful moves on offense. Wellston struggled to put the ball up, and Nelsonville-York’s defense was a tough act to beat during these first eight minutes.

The Golden Rockets stepped on the gas in the second quarter, and Wes Briggs provided lockdown offense and defense. Briggs provided 41 points for Wellston, as well as nine rebounds and four steals. It is safe to say Briggs was a force to be reckoned with, and the Buckeyes definitely felt the pressure and fell back on their lead.

The Golden Rockets pushed their lead ahead in the third quarter and made a seven-point difference on the board. The Buckeyes fought to close the gap but struggled to do so when they were faced with Wellston’s defense.

In the fourth quarter, Champ Schultz fell to the floor due to an ankle injury. This impacted Nelsonville-York’s ability to make plays on offense, as well as their ability to score on Wellston’s other big play maker, Justin Jackson, on defense.

To end the game, the Rockets pushed their lead to an eleven-point difference. The Buckeyes fought very hard to try and take the game back, but ended up falling short. Wellston’s energy carried the lead throughout the game past the end of the first quarter, which made it impossible for Nelsonville-York to catch up.

The Rockets took the win tonight, 67-56, and are hunting for another win against the Northwest Mohawks on Tuesday, Feb. 24.  Nelsonville-York will be playing Eastern (Sardinia, Ohio) also on Tuesday, Feb. 24.
