This episode of Echoes from the History Center explores the creation of One Vote!, a new historical musical inspired by the founding of Marietta and the people who helped shape early Ohio.
Host Tom O’Grady of the Southeast Ohio History Center speaks with playwright and Mountain Stage co-founder Larry Groce and Northwest Territory Museum Society Executive Director Erin Augenstein about the production, which centers on Ephraim Cutler’s pivotal vote during Ohio’s 1802 Constitutional Convention. The conversation examines how that vote helped preserve protections for free Black Ohioans and why the story remains relevant today.
Groce and Augenstein also discuss the Northwest Ordinance, the settlement of Marietta, the historical figures who inspired the musical, and the collaboration between historians, museums and theater artists to bring the production to the stage. They reflect on the educational value of presenting regional history through live performance and the extensive research undertaken by the cast and creative team.
