OAK HILL, Ohio (WOUB) –- The Wellston Golden Rockets travelled to Oak Hill on Friday to face the Oaks for a non-conference matchup. The Golden Rockets would take the week one matchup, 35-6.
Before the game, both teams honored Bailey Ousley, a player who played for both teams and passed away over the summer, by carrying out his jersey and holding a moment of silence.
The first quarter started off with a fumble by the Oaks to hand the ball right over the Golden Rockets after only one play. After getting the ball, Wellston turned it back over to the Oaks after a turnover on downs on a six-minute drive.
The Oaks had the ball for no longer than 10 seconds before the Golden Rockets forced another fumble and took the ball back. Wellston then scored on the drive, and their point-after-touchdown attempt was successful for them to get the 7-0 lead.
The Oaks would keep the ball for not even a full play before Carmine Crabtree would intercept the throw and take it to the endzone for a pick six. The PAT attempt would be no good, but the Golden Rockets would still lead 13-0 going into the second quarter.
Oak Hill’s first drive of the new quarter would not produce any points and end in turnover on downs. Wellston’s new drive would end the same way, and the first half would end in a 13-0 score, Golden Rockets’ lead.
After both teams’ first drives of the new half come up short, Wellston would get their third touchdown on a run by Aiden Arthur. The Golden Rockets would try a two-point conversion and be successful, thanks to Wes Briggs.
The following drive for the Oaks would have a major 15-yard gain to convert the first down, but would come up short after another punt fumble, giving the Golden Rockets the ball on the 19-yard line, ending the quarter.
Wellston was in the endzone going into the fourth quarter, but a bad snap led to a loss of 13 yards. However, they would still be able to grab another touchdown, courtesy of Arthur again. They extend their lead to 27-0.
When Oak Hill would get the ball back, they would finally get their first touchdown, thanks to William Strickland bringing in the drive. They would try the two-point conversion, but the Wellston defense put up the stop. Wellston leads, 27-6.
The Golden Rockets would fight right back after Djay Hudson brings it in for another touchdown, with just five minutes to go in the fourth. Caiden Sharp converted the two-point try, and Wellston leads 35-6 for the final score.
The Golden Rockets will be back home to face Piketon, and the Oaks will host Eastern next week.
