Pointers slay the Dragons in Fairfield

PROCTORVILLE, Ohio (WOUB) – The South Point Pointers hit the road this week and traveled to Fairland, beating the Dragons 30-24 in the end.
The game started with a lengthy six-minute drive from the Pointers, capped off with a 19-yard touchdown run from senior running back Landon Vance. The extra point attempt was no good, putting South Point up 6-0.
The Dragons got good field position after a squib kick but were stopped on fourth and one on the Pointers’ 35-yard line, coming down to a chain measurement. After a big run on fourth down from Pointers Senior running back Robert Napier, the first quarter ended.
A screen pass to Vance would put a nine-yard receiving touchdown on the day, putting the Pointers up 13-0. South Point then attempted an onside kick after the score, but it was unsuccessful after an additional talk between the officials.
Right after, Fairland QB Kinyon Smith would take it on a designed QB run, resulting in a fumble that was recovered by South Point linebacker Anthony Neal. While the Pointers dominated on the ground the entire night, their receivers started slow, dropping multiple passes.
Following the fumble, Pointers’ quarterback Ethan Hunt’s pass was tipped and then picked off by defensive lineman Orion Tolbert. Fairland would be unsuccessful in making anything out of it, but the Pointers would force a turnover on downs after a long sack on third down. The Dragons would then force a three-and-out on their own.
Smith would then answer the punt with a huge 43-yard touchdown pass to Ford Rickard. The two-point conversion was no good, making it 13-6.
Following a lengthy drive, Fairland would force a turnover on downs. Following that turnover, Fairland wide receiver Kylan Blake caught a screen pass for a 66-yard touchdown with a minute and a half to go in the first half. The two-point try was no good, letting South Point keep their lead at 13-12.
Following a pair of penalties, Pointers backup quarterback Marcus Hanshaw then sent a prayer through the air, and Davon Lewis would answer it. They would then kick it on the Dragons’ four-yard line to put them up 16-12 as both teams went into the locker room for halftime.
Coming out of the break, Fairland would get the ball and would turn it over on downs on a fourth-and-one stop. Napier would once again take over, breaking away for a forty-yard rush. Vance would once again punch it in for another Pointers touchdown, getting his third on the night and putting South Point up 23-12 to start the second half.
Following a 40-yard run by Kyan Hamlin, Fairland would turn it over on downs yet again. South Point would then run the clock out, marking the end of the third quarter.
Coming right out of the break, Ethan Hunt would find Davon Lewis once again, this time for a huge 40-yard touchdown pass. A successful extra point put them up 30-12.
After back-to-back sacks, Fairland would move it down the field, including throws to Maddox VonVille and Ford Rickard. They would be stopped once again by the Pointers’ defense for yet another turnover on downs.
The Dragons’ defense would respond back with a forced fumble by VonVille on Napier. The following drive was quick, getting capped off with a ten-yard touchdown run by Christian Bompus. Another failed two-point conversion would make it 30-18.
Fairland would then answer that scoring drive with a successful onside kick. A two-minute drive filled with South Point penalties would end with a 25-yard touchdown pass to Blake. They would only get six off it, putting a dent in South Point’s lead, making it 30-24. The second onside kick attempt would be no good, and the Pointers would run out the clock, securing the win.
South Point moves on to 5-1, snapping Fairland’s four-game win streak. They will host Chesapeake on Oct. 2. Fairland will look to get another win as they travel to Portsmouth on Oct. 2 as well.
