NELSONVILLE, Ohio (WOUB) — The Nelsonville-York Buckeyes hosted the Meigs Marauders in a TVC-Ohio matchup. The Buckeyes cruised on both sides of the ball, winning 42-10.
In the second week of conference play, Nelsonville-York High School honored both communities’ armed services and first responders before tonight’s game. The Buckeyes wore their National Guard honor jerseys and brought that energy into the first quarter.
The Buckeyes received the ball after the Marauders turned it over on fourth down on their first drive. They capitalized on their offense, with quarterback Cam Sullivan throwing to Gavin Lavy in the end zone. The Buckeyes’ drive went for 68 yards in the first five minutes.
The same pattern continued into the rest of the quarter, with the Marauders unable to work their way down the field, resulting in a punt. Weston Wheatley secured the ball to the 46-yard line, and Nelsonville-York found themselves on the scoreboard again. Buckeye Walker Stone was their guy who picked up the ball off a dynamic fumble into the end zone. Nelsonville-York ended the first quarter up 14-0.
Both teams’ energy remained the same at the beginning of the second, but it wasn’t until about the halfway mark that the Buckeyes defense intercepted Marauders quarterback Gunner Cleland’s pass. They couldn’t use it, and Meigs ended up getting their own interception before the Buckeyes called the first timeout.
This momentum shift didn’t affect the Buckeyes for long, and Stone worked the ball down the field. Wheatly used his team’s work and took the ball into the end zone again, putting Nelsonville-York up 21-0 going into the half.
Unfortunately, Meigs couldn’t find their footing coming out of the break when Buckeye Jaxon Blake ran it all the way to the house off their kickoff. The Buckeyes scored another touchdown after that, and it seemed to be lit out in Nelsonville-York. With a running clock on the board, the Buckeyes got one final touchdown to keep the win at home, 42-0.
Nelsonville-York will travel to play Wellston next week, while the Meigs will host Athens in another week of conference play.
