BEVERLY, Ohio (WOUB) — The Barnesville Shamrocks (7-0) traveled to Beverly looking to hand the Fort Frye Cadets (6-1) their first loss of the season. Barnesville would use a strong running game to defeat Fort Frye 34-7
The game would start with the Shamrocks relying on the legs of their running back Trey Toliver. His number would be called multiple times on the opening drive as Barnesville would march down inside the five-yard line. From here, Toliver would punch in a short one-yard score to get the Shamrocks on the board. The point-after attempt would be missed to make the score 6-0.
Fort Frye would immediately get behind the sticks on their first drive. Gavin Rauch would be dragged down for a nine-yard loss at the 21-yard line; this would lead to a three-and-out for the Cadets and their first punt of the night.
On the Shamrocks’ ensuing drive, it would only take two plays to get back into the endzone. Toliver would burst through the middle and score a 41-yard touchdown, his second of the night. The Shamrocks would try for two, and quarterback Colt Carpenter would find Jaxton Swallie to make the score 14-0.
Fort Frye would be able to put a drive together on their next offensive possession, picking up two separate first downs on the backs of Tytan Waller and Sam Bricker. The Shamrock defense would step up and force the Cadets to punt, regaining possession at the eleven-yard line.
As the second quarter got underway, Barnesville would march down the field mixing in both the pass and run game. The Shamrocks would conduct an excellent 14-play drive and cap it off with a QB sneak by Carpenter. Barnesville would go for two once again, but this time fail on the conversion to make the score 20-0.
Fort Frye would start their next drive immediately with a holding penalty, once again putting them behind the sticks. The Shamrocks would force yet another punt, setting their offense up in prime scoring position once again.
Barnesville would start to drain the clock and start heavily relying on their running game. The Shamrocks would march to the 36-yard line, and Toliver would finish it off; he would rush for his third touchdown of the half, this one from 36 yards out. This score would put Barnesville up 27-0.
The first half would end shortly after this score and keep their foot on the gas in the second half. The Cadets would end up scoring a touchdown but go on to lose 34-7.
Fort Frye is handed their first loss of the season and will stay at home next week to take on the Marietta Tigers. The Shamrocks remain undefeated on the year and will be on the road again to face the Martins Ferry Purple Riders.
