In this episode of Echoes From the History Center, host Tom O’Grady speaks with Tyler McDaniel, Board President of Little Cities of Black Diamonds, about the history of southeastern Ohio’s former coal-mining communities. McDaniel discusses the organization’s efforts to preserve the region’s history through archival collections, oral histories and community engagement. The conversation also explores the industrial development, cultural diversity and lasting legacy of the region’s coal towns.
McDaniel previews Little Cities Day 2026, returning to the historic Tecumseh Theater in Shawnee on Saturday, Oct. 24, with this year’s theme, “Sustaining Heritage.” The free event will feature panel discussions, historical tours, presentations and activities highlighting regional history and preservation efforts.
