ATHENS, Ohio (WOUB) – Ohio Football (5-2, 3-0) traveled to Sacramento State (1-6, 0-4) for a unique conference game. From the opening drive to the final whistle, the Bobcats dominated the Hornets, winning 48-7.
It was a new experience for the Bobcats, as Ohio had to go to California to play the newest member of the Mid-American Conference at 10 p.m. EST.
Ohio came into the game winning on a three-game winning streak, which included two conference victories. On the other side, the Hornets have struggled at the FBS level as they entered the night without a win against an FBS team this season.
Sacramento State started with the ball, but the Ohio defense forced a quick punt.
Nick Poulos got his first chance to show off in his hometown as he grew up in Granite Bay, California, just 21 miles away from Sacramento State. He put on a great performance in this first drive, picking up big gains with his legs until Duncan Brune punched the ball into the endzone from three yards out for the first points of the game.
Ohio forced another quick punt but was not able to convert on a 3rd & 8, forcing a 50-yard field goal attempt, which Will Hryszko drilled to go up 10-0.
The Bobcats kept it rolling on their next drive, with Victor Rosa weaving through the defense for a 16-yard touchdown to extend their lead to 17.
The defense kept up their strong start to the game with Barry Dillion getting an interception just a few plays later. The offense was able to get three points out of it with a 37-yard field goal from Hyrszko.
Every series felt like déjà vu, with Ohio forcing until punt and going down and scoring with Brune rushing in from 14 yards out for his second score of the game as the Bobcats led 27-0 heading into halftime.
The momentum kept rolling into the third quarter, with the Bobcats coming out swinging as Poulos connected with Preston Bowman for a 67-yard touchdown.
Ohio would pull their starters after the score and would tack on a touchdown with Levi Davis rushing it in to go up 41-0.
The defense was unable to hold the shutout, with Kenyon Shabazz breaking free for a 38-yard touchdown. But it was too little, too late as the Bobcats cruised to a 48-7 victory.
Ohio will return to Athens for another MAC showdown against Eastern Michigan on Oct. 24.
Sacramento State will head to Muncie, Indiana, to take on Ball State also on Oct. 24.
