Ohio baseball put two runs on the board in the first inning of their series opening game with Buffalo, and the ‘Cats never trailed in their 6-1 win over the Bulls.

Lately, Ohio had been winning thanks to its bats, and even though it showed up Saturday, it didn’t need much offensive firepower because Jake Miller’s strong start set the tone for a quality pitching performance. Miller went 5 and 1/3 innings for his second win of the season, and allowed the Bulls only run of the game on a Charlie Sobieraski solo homer.

The Bobcats’ starter allowed just four hits and struck out eight Bulls’ batters.

Singles from Manny DeJesus and Garrett Black put runners on the corner in the first inning, and an error brought in Ohio’s first run. Mitch Longo grounded out to score the second run of the inning.

Sobieraski cut the Bobcats’ lead to one with his homer in the fifth, but the Bobcats put up four runs in the following inning.

With runners on second and third, Cody Gaertner doubled to left center to drive in two runs. Two walks loaded the base, and the Ty Black picked up an RBI on a fielder’s choice. The Ohio’s fourth run of the inning came on the same play with an error by the shortstop that scored Gaertner.

Spencer Sapp and Christian Botter each recorded an out to finish the bottom of the sixth after Miller left the game. Tom Colletti pitched the final three innings of the game. He struck out six and allowed just two hits.

Brent Cleland took the loss for Buffalo. In six innings of work he allowed all six of the Green and White’s runs, five of which were earned.

The Bobcats were errorless in the field for the first time since their 10-7 win at Kentucky on March 17.

Ohio and Buffalo will finish up their series on Sunday with a double header in Butler, Penn. First pitch is set for noon.
