Marietta W. Soccer: Pioneers Draw Even With Ohio Valley
< < Back to marietta-w-soccer-pioneers-draw-even-ohio-valleyIn their second scrimmage of the season, the Marietta Pioneers forced a scoreless draw against the visiting Ohio Valley Fighting Scots.
Both squads had their chances in their respective offensive halves, but sloppy ball-handling and solid play from Marietta goalkeeper Kaitlyn Pearse and Ohio Valley’s Brianna Rice kept the shots from reaching the back of the net.
Marietta Coach Tracy Blasius applauded the play of her senior keeper, who is coming off of an offseason back injury.
“I’m very pleased with what she brings to us on the field and off of the field,” Blasius said.
The Pioneers counterattack-style offense gave forwards Stevie Reilly and Rebecca Thomas some room to operate, but Ohio Valley’s defense was quick to get back to protect its goal.
Blasius noted that there is work to be done between the midfielders and forwards in regards to the offensive game plan.
“The forwards will continue to work on making runs and creating space for themselves,” Blasius said.
As for the defense, Blasius liked what she saw.
“As the game began, I thought we were under a lot of pressure, but I thought we handled it very well,” Blaisus said, “We’re starting to learn how to defend as a team.”
The Pioneers open up regular season play on Friday, Aug. 30 at Defiance.
