A pleasant evening in Hiram, Ohio, was anything but pleasant for the Marietta Pioneers on Thursday as they lost big to Hiram College 5-1.

Marietta (2-6, 0-0) now findd itself in the midst of a four-match losing streak, while Hiram (6-2, 0-0) broke its two-match skid with Thursday’s win.

Senior goalkeeper Kaitlyn Pearse remained sidelined as she recovers from an injury she suffered against Washington and Jefferson College on the Sept. 18. Freshman Sam Kelley made her second consecutive start in Pearse’s place.

Kelley was tested right away, but Hiram’s second shot on target found the back of the net. Freshman Alison Cowell notched her third goal of the season in the fifth minute.

After a Sarah Condon shot found the post in the ninth minute, Hiram lit up the scoreboard again. This time, Cowell was on the assisting end of the goal, dishing the ball to freshman Robynn McGroarty for her team-leading seventh goal on the year.

The Pioneers cut the lead in the half in the 21st minute when junior Stevie Reilly lent a helping hand to senior Emily Jones. The goal was Jones’ third on the year, tying her for the team lead with Reilly.

Marietta’s success was short-lived. Four minutes later, freshman Allie Glatt strolled into the box and netted her third goal of the season, putting the Terriers up 3-1.

Goals from junior Kelley Martin and sophomore Michaela Edmond, in the 33rd and 36th minute, respectively, put the Terriers up 5-1 going into the half. The first half saw the Terriers outshoot the Pioneers 13-4.

The second half proved to be less lopsided. Hiram only outshot Marietta 5-1 and did not put another goal past Kelley.

Hiram takes on another Ohio Athletic Conference team in Otterbein this Sunday at home.

For the Pioneers, their struggles against teams above-.500 continue. Both of their wins came against sub-.500 squads. Thomas More (5-1-1) comes to town on Saturday at 1 p.m.
