LEXINGTON, Ky. (AP) – Kentucky’s major party candidates for governor talked over each other as they tried to reach voters during a critical final debate broadcast live on statewide television one week before the election.

Republican nominee Matt Bevin accused Democrat Jack Conway on Monday night of “shaking down” companies for money during his tenure as attorney general. Conway laughed at Bevin’s comments. He said that as attorney general, he sued companies that were defrauding the state’s Medicaid system, returning $300 million to the taxpayers.

Bevin also accused Conway of lying when he said he cut his taxpayer-funded budget by 40 percent while in office. Conway said he did indeed make such cuts.

Independent candidate Drew Curtis was not invited to participate.
