Season Outlook: Federal Hocking Lady Lancers

The Federal Hocking Lady Lancers experienced an "off" season in 2012-13, finishing with a mark of 6-13. This season's squad, which returns most of its playmakers, looks to take the next step in a competitive conference.
Head coach Jeff McKibben said that only losing one senior will maintain team chemistry coming into the new season.
“I think we will be a lot better this year, you know, I don’t have to go back and teach kids new stuff,” said McKibben.
McKibben was also impressed with the increased number of players. Twenty-two girls will suit up for both the junior varsity and varsity squads, with three members of each class making up the top squad. The diversity of ages among McKibben’s players differs from last year’s underclassman-heavy roster.
Coming into the new season, McKibben cited senior forward Cheyenne Singer as an experienced leader.
“She’s been a leader for this group from her freshman year on,” said McKibben.
McKibben also said that point guard Carley Tabler will share leadership duties with Singer.
According to several players, efficiently moving the ball down the court has been a primary focus of offseason practices. Cleaner transition play will lead to an effective offense that is designed around specific plays.
Forward Megan Thompson explained that looking for Singer in the post will be the focal point of the offense, especially with this being her last season in Stewart.
Defensively, a deeper lineup will allow Fed Hock to execute a high-energy, man-to-man game plan. Running a man defense is a high-risk, high-reward system that depends upon clear communication. A team that is on the same page is a winning team.
Tabler also said that in order for the team to advance further into the playoffs, the team’s overall stamina needs to improve.
Through hard work and communication, the 2013-14 Lady Lancers plan to be better in all phases of the game. With powerhouses Waterford and Eastern expected to take the top two spots in the TVC-Hocking, McKibben said that third place in the Hocking is within grasp.
