Chief Keith Washburn tells the Chillicothe Gazette that a man told police Sunday morning that he thought his estranged wife had been the victim of a crime.
Washburn says the woman ran from a Chillicothe home to an arriving police cruiser and said an off-duty officer had sexually assaulted her. She says she met the officer at a hotel in the city and later went to a home.
Authorities did not provide details on the accusation and the officer’s identity has not been released.
Washburn says the officer has not been charged.
Mayor Luke Feeney says the investigation will be handled outside the city’s police department.
