OU Chamber Orchestra Prepares For East Coast Tour
< < Back to ou-chamber-orchestra-prepares-east-coast-tourThe Ohio University School of Music's Chamber Orchestra will be embarking on a special East Coast tour to take place during OU’s spring break, March 1-4, kicking off with a Feb. 27 performance in Templeton-Blackburn Alumni Memorial Auditorium.
"This is the first out-of-state tour in at least a decade for the ensemble, and I can’t think of a better experience for our students than New York City," said Director of Orchestral Activities Steven Huang. "This tour is a chance for us to share fine orchestral music and the talents from Ohio University with a broader community. It is also a learning experience for students to see different musical groups and to visit youth symphonies and other institutes."
The touring group will comprise the core string members of the Ohio University Symphony Orchestra, including more than 20 music majors and non-majors.
Themed "Winter to Spring," the performances will begin with Astor Piazzolla’s "Winter" from The Four Seasons of Buenos Aires, and end with Vivaldi’s Baroque classic concerto from The Four Seasons, "Spring," with featured soloist and OU violin faculty member, Solomiya Ivakhiv, who has strong connections to the New York and Philadelphia music communities.
Because the tour will have a performance at the Ukraine Institute in New York City, many of the works featured in the performance are of Ukrainian background. The concert will also include Janacek’s Suite for Strings.
The Chamber Orchestra's free Feb. 27 Athens performance is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Guest artist Sharon Wei, violist, will join the orchestra for a performance of Mozart’s Sinfonia Concertante for violin and viola.
