Adams Now All-Time Wins Leader In Athens

Quarterback Brendan Sano carried a hammer as Athens took the field Friday night because of a 609-yard effort the week before. I think its safe to say that hammer will remain in his possession after leading the Bulldogs to a 36-14 victory over Wellston.
Athens set the tone early as it took only one minute and 50 seconds for the Bulldogs to find the endzone as Sano found his biggest target, Robert Dickelman, for a 48-yard touchdown. Sano spread the wealth before the score connecting with four different receivers before reaching midfield.
Wellston wouldn’t be phased however as the Golden Rockets amassed an impressive 13 play, 74-yard drive that wore down the Athens defense and eventually resulted in a 2-yard touchdown run by Travis Jayjohn.
Unfortunately for Wellston, this is would be its only score of the first half. Despite having over 13 minutes of possession versus Athens’ six, the Golden Rocket defense was unable to stop Sano and his ability to throw the long ball.
In the first half alone Sano had pass plays of 48,43 and 45 yards, all resulting in touchdowns. As if that wasn’t enough Sano and receiver Treyce Albin connected on an 81-yard catch and run on their very first offensive possession in the second half.
In all Sano finished with a video game-esque stat line of 11-14 passing with 300 yards and 5 touchdowns. Helping his cause were the aforementioned Albon and Dickelman who combined to have eight receptions, all five touchdowns and caught all but five of Sano’s passing yards.
Despite the loss, a bright spot for the Golden Rockets was the play of Jayjohn as well as running back/ line backer Nick Cox who carried the majority of snaps for Wellston and were involved in almost every play on defense. Jayjohn would score again in the final minutes to end the game on a not so sour note for Wellston fans.
As if this game needed more excitement, with tonight’s win Athens head coach Ryan Adams became the all-time win’s leader in school history. Adams’ 78 wins moved him passed Don Eskey and into sole possession of the record.
Wellston will look to bounce back as they travel to Meigs next Friday. Athens will hope to remain undefeated in conference play as they host River Valley.
