Vinton County Vikings Start Season Undefeated
< < Back to vinton-county-vikings-start-season-undefeatedThe Vinton County Vikings continued their hot start to the season. The Vikings won both of their games this week, and improved their record to 4-0.
On Tuesday the Vikings traveled to Athens and controlled the Bulldogs and were able come away with a 78-60 victory. The Vikings continued what they’ve done all season showing they excel on both sides of the court, as they have won all three of their game by double digits. Through their first three games, The Vikings are averaging 72 points per game while only allowing an average of 52 points per game.
Vinton County got great offensive performances from Tristan Bartoe and Derick Jones as they led the Vikings in points with 24 from Bartoe and 23 from Jones. Naylen Yates also chipped in with a healthy 15 points. Vinton County shot the ball from the 3-point line exceptionally well shooting 9-18 from deep which set the tone for their offense.
“I thought it was a solid road performance,” Vinton County Coach Matt Combs said. “Anytime you’re able to play well in a tough road environment against a good team you have to be pleased.”
Later on in the week Vinton County went on the road again to take on Wellston and continued to play well as they defeated the Golden Rockets by a score of 69-38. Coach Matt Combs believes that his defense helped get their offense.
“We hit a couple of shots early on which always helps,” Combs said. “We were able to create some turnovers on the defensive end and we were able to get points off those turnovers. Our guys were committed to our half-court defense and that helped us get stops and make plays on offense.”
Vinton County had a balanced offensive attack with three players having scored at least 12 points in the game. Derick Jones had a team high 15 points in the game. The team shot well from deep once again as they shot 6-14 from beyond the arc.
The Vikings look to continue to their great start to the season as they return to their home court on December 20th as they take on River Valley. They will then go on the road on the 23rd to take on Zane Trace.
