Ohio Wrestling Pulls Off Win at Clarion

The Ohio Bobcats wrestling team needed a win to regain momentum after falling into a big deficit and losing last Friday against Northern Iowa.
The Bobcats (7-5, 4-3 MAC) did just enough to get by yesterday, defeating Clarion on the road 21-17.
It came down to the 285-pound weight class match with Ohio’s Zack Parker taking on Evan Daley. Parker won the match in an 11-6 decision, giving his team the win, enabling them to maintain their perfect road record.
Sophomore Cameron Kelly proved vital with crucial pins. Kelly dominated the 133 weight class against Clarion’s redshirt freshman Dontae Mcgee, pulling a reversal pin to give the Bobcats six points.
Two of his teammates also recorded key pins, adding up to 12 Ohio points.
This was a back-and-forth match all night.
Ohio started off sluggish in the 125 weight class with Shakur Laney falling to Jake Gromacki in an 8-1 decision.
Ohio led 6-3 going into 141 weight class, but Clarion would bounce back thanks to Brock Zacherl beating Ohio’s Noah Forrider in a 6-2 decision, snapping his winning streak. Clarion would also take the 149 weight class of Jake Keller vs. Ohio’s Kade Kowalski in an 6-4 decision.
The Bobcats were down 6-9 before Cullen Cummings won over Clarion’s Taylor Cahill in the 157 weight class. The Bobcats also pulled off a close decision in the 165 weight class with Austin Reese vs. Evan Delong.
After Arsen Ashughyan suffered an unexpected defeat to Clarion’s Dominic Rigous, the teams were tied at 12. The last three weight classes, 184, 197 and 285, proved pivotal in deciding the outcome of the match.
Dontae McGee defeated Clarion’s Scott Marmoll in the 184 weight class. The Bobcats then succumbed when Devin king lost to Dustin Conti in the 197 weight class, by technical foul.
The Bobcats hope for more consistency on the mat going forward, as the Mid-American Confernce and NCAA tournaments approach.
They travel to Norfolk, Va. to finish MAC play against Old Dominion on Friday at 7 p.m.
