This year's harsh winter kept many indoors, but those whose job it is to clear roads and keep people safe still venture out into the cold.

One Athens organization wanted to show their appreciation for these workers. The Athens Elks Lodge 973 held a free spaghetti luncheon Wednesday afternoon.

Employees from the Ohio Department of Transportation, the County Engineers Office, the City of Athens Engineering and Street Department and the Athens County Township Garages were invited.

Lodge leader Dave Williams said the idea for the luncheon was originally just a suggestion.

"After a harsh winter, that we had this past winter, the suggestion was made and we followed up with it that we should acknowledge all of the snow plow drivers and the hard working winter employees that kept our roads clear this winter and helped us get through all the snow we had this past year," said Williams.

Williams said they served more than 75 lunches and about 65 of those were delivered to those who couldn't leave work to attend the luncheon.
