Ohio's attorney general says Ohioans have been reporting "spoofed" phone calls that appear to come from their own phone numbers or from similar numbers and that may be attempted scams.

Attorney General Mike DeWine's statement says more than 30 consumers have reported such calls since last week. He says altering the number appearing on a consumer's caller ID is one tactic con artists may use to make scams seem convincing.

Caller ID spoofing generally refers to altering the phone number reflected on a consumer's caller ID to make it appear as a local call.

DeWine urges consumers to hang up or not answer suspicious calls and disregard any prompt saying to press a button to "opt out" of such a call.

DeWine says consumers suspecting scams should contact his office.
