Nelsonville Schools On Lockdown: Bank Robbery Suspect On the Loose

NELSONVILLE — The Nelsonville-York School District initiated a lockdown at about 10:30 a.m. after receiving a report of a bank robbery suspect on the loose.
Superintendent Mick McLelland said the schools are under a “soft” lockdown, which means school is continuing as normal, but no activities will occur outside.
“There’s no one outside, our (physical education) had to come inside, our elementary recesses will be inside, and the doors are locked of course, but they always are,” McLelland said. “And we won’t let anybody in the doors unless we absolutely know who they are.”
The school district was notified of a social media post that mentioned the bank robbery, and after confirming with Nelsonville Police, the decision was made to lock the doors.
A report sent out by the Hocking College Police Department stated the People’s Bank of Nelsonville reported a robbery at about 9:23 a.m. on Monday.
“No weapon was shown, the suspect slid the teller a note and feld on foot with an undisclosed amount of money towards Chestnut Street,” according to the press release by the college police.
Hocking College has not initiated lockdown procedures, according to spokesperson Tim Brunicardi. An email to students, faculty and staff notifying them of the situation, and giving a description of the suspect.
“They were told not to approach anyone suspicious,” Brunicardi said.
