Former Bobcat Band Reunites For OU Parents Weekend

It's Parents Weekend at Ohio University, which means swarms of OU moms and dads will be looking for activities around town.
One returning alumnus is joining them–and plans to provide tonight's entertainment.
Jackie O’s Pub & Brewery is hosting Alex Vaughn with former members of his group The Big Idea, along with a special surprise guest.
Virtuoso pianist David Lessing, from the platinum-selling, internationally acclaimed group Blessid Union of Souls, will take the stage alongside Vaughn to showcase his skills on the ivories. Tonight's show kicks off at 10 p.m.
Vaughn began playing the guitar during his senior year of high school after being sidelined by a lacrosse-related knee injury. He then discovered a love of playing music and performing for people. It wasn’t until later on that he decided this is what he wanted to do for a career.
His first solo performance was in 2005 in the old Baker Center Front Room. His band The Big Idea was formed three years later. He then released his first album, Ascending the Falls, which to date has sold more than 5,000 copies.
Vaughn graduated from Ohio University in 2009 with a degree in Business and Communications. He now lives in Cincinnati and plays frequently throughout the local metropolitan area.
"My band mixes many innovative sounds with pop and rock to foster a catchy, driven sound that is often compared to Jason Mraz or Jack Johnson," he said, referring to his group's on-stage vibe.
To achieve this sound, Vaughn uses a high-tech loop system to overlap parts, which creates a full band effect. Even when other people are playing with him, he incorporates looping with lead guitar and vocals.
"This is a new technique that a lot of musicians aren’t using yet. It makes me sound different than a traditional acoustic artist," he explained.
In addition to having a successful music career, Vaughn has also achieved a high level of internet fame. He now has a cult following on Vine with more than 70,000 people following his exploits, along with his almost-famous dog, Piper.
Due to his popularity on Vine, one of his Athens followers suggested that he come back to town to perform.
Vaughn’s shows have a family-friendly atomsphere, featuring a mix of original music and multi-generational cover songs ranging from groups like Creedence Clearwater Revival, Journey and Coldplay.
"The upbeat tempos and complex harmonies are guaranteed to give everyone in the room goose bumps at least one time," he said.
