Preview: Athens, Nelsonville-York Battle With TVC-Ohio Crown On The Line
< < Back to preview-athens-nelsonville-york-battle-tvc-ohio-crown-lineAthens and Nelsonville-York–two schools separated by just 14 miles; two schools with a rich football history; two schools with one common goal–a TVC-Ohio title.
The Bulldogs (9-0, 5-0 TVC-Ohio) come into Friday night’s game undefeated and are looking to finish the 2014 regular season on a high note.
“You know, it’s really 100% focused on going to Nelsonville-York and playing for a league title and trying to get another perfect season under our belt,” said Athens Head Coach Ryan Adams. “They’re excited about going to Nelsonville-York and getting to play for another league title.”
The TVC-Ohio title will not come easy for the Green and Gold, as the Buckeyes (7-2, 5-0 TVC-Ohio) have averaged just over 30 points per game in each of their wins. Coach Adams knows this game will be no walk in the park.
“We’re going to have to go into the ball game knowing we’re going to play a hard and physical battle. Whoever brings the more physical element to the ball game will have the most success.”
The rivalry of Nelsonville-York and Athens dates back to the 1980’s, when Ryan Adams was playing for the Bulldogs.
“It makes for a lot of hype leading up to the day of the game each year,” Adams said. “It means a lot to these kids to keep the trophy at home. Our kids certainly get very excited and pumped about playing this game and as long as the league title keeps coming along with this game, it will continue to have a lot of meaning.”
For the Buckeyes, this game not only is important for conference title hopes, but for postseason hopes as well.
Currently, the Buckeyes are No. 5 in Division VII, Region 21, and their scenario is simple: win and they’re in. If they lose to Athens, then there is still a chance to make the postseason.
It all goes down Friday night at 7:30 p.m. in Nelsonville.
