WOUB-HD to Broadcast ‘American Masters — Basquiat: Rage to Riches’ Sept. 14

Jean Michel-Basquiat was born in 1960 in Brooklyn, New York to Haitian and Puerto-Rican parents. Throughout his lifetime he created a great multitude of artworks, from graffiti to visceral neo-expressionist paintings rich with symbolism and abstraction that served as direct commentary on class struggle and criticism of racism, colonialism, and the consumption of art.
On Friday, September 14 at 9 p.m., WOUB-HD will broadcast American Masters — Basquiat: Rage to Riches, a documentary that features commentary from Basquiat’s sisters, Lisane and Jeanine, who have never before spoken about their brother’s legacy. The film includes candid interviews with Basquiat’s various art dealers, such as Bruno Bischofberger, Larry Gagosian and Mary Boone; as well as others with whom he had intimate relationships with.
The broadcast is a part of American Masters’ Artist Flight series, which kicked off on Friday, August 31 and has featured documentaries on artists Eva Hesse, Elizabeth Murray, Andrew Wyeth, and concludes with “Basquiat: Rage to Riches.” Listen to Emily Votaw’s interview with Dr. Andrea Frohne, art historian for Arts of the African World and faculty at Ohio University’s School of Art+Design and School of Interdisciplinary Arts, about Basquiat’s life and legacy, above.
