Athens Remains Undefeated in TVC-Ohio with Win over Meigs
< < Back to ?p=223967In a game that was tight throughout the first half it the Athens Bulldogs (5-1) remained undefeated in TVC-Ohio play with a 50-20 win over the Meigs Marauders, thanks to an explosive second half and strong play from Clay Davis who totaled over 300 combined yards for the game. With the win Athens also extended their winning streak against Meigs to ten games.
Meigs scored first to take its first and only lead of the game as their freshman quarterback Coulter Cleland connected with senior Cole Adams for an 83-yard touchdown to give the Marauders the 7-0 lead. Athens responded later in the quarter as quarterback Clay Davis scored a six-yard touchdown to tie the game at seven.
Athens added two more touchdowns in the second quarter. Sophomore Peyton Gail blocked a punt and recovered the football in the end zone for the Bulldogs touchdown. Athens extended their lead to 21-7 as senior Nicholas Hawes ran for a 16-yard touchdown with 4:09 remaining in the first half.
Meigs responded with an Abe Lundy touchdown run two minutes later for the final score of the half; sending the two teams into the locker room with Athens leading 21-14.
In the Bulldogs’ first drive of the second half, Davis found junior wide receiver Nate Trainer in the end zone for a 16-yard touchdown. Meigs’ receiver Weston Baer quickly responded catching an 18-yard touchdown pass for just a few of his 117 yards on the night. Unfortunately for Meigs that would be their last score of the game.
From then on it was all Bulldogs as they ran off the next 22 straight points, starting with running back Corbin Stalder who took it 14 yards to the house extending the Athens lead to 35-20.
The star in this game for the Bulldogs was senior Clay Davis threw for 147 yards and one touchdown, while rushing for 182 yards and scoring two touchdowns including one in the fourth quarter that helped make Athens lead insurmountable.
While it was a tough second half for the Marauders, a few names stood out on the night including quarterback Coulter Cleland who threw for 289 yards and two touchdowns and Baer who was Cleland’s main target all night.
Athens returns to The Plains next week as they welcome the Wellston Golden Rockets while, Meigs has another home game next week as they host Point Pleasant (WV).
