LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) – A Kentucky appeals court has ruled that Republican Gov. Matt Bevin’s administration has the authority to issue a subpoena to a former state official who served during the tenure of Bevin’s Democratic predecessor.

A three-judge panel of the Kentucky Court of Appeals ruled in a case revolving around the subpoena power of the state’s finance secretary. The panel ruled Friday that state law gives the finance secretary broad subpoena authority when investigating mismanagement of state funds.

The case stems from Frank Lassiter’s refusal to comply with the Bevin administration’s investigation into a no-bid contract awarded during former Democratic Gov. Steve Beshear’s tenure. Bevin has feuded with Beshear and his son, Attorney General Andy Beshear, who is running for governor.

Lassiter’s attorney, J. Guthrie True, says an appeal is possible.
