Discussing ‘Demagogues and Despots,” 3 Elliott Studio, and Donkey Coffee With The Tailwinds

The Tailwinds have been making superb, deeply sincere, and usually very loud music that sounds a bit like some kind of ’90s alternative rock recipe that calls for one part Soundgarden and one part Deftones, with a healthy dash of Foo Fighters, for almost the better part of a decade here Athens. Guitarist and vocalist Attila Horvath is the core member, and he’s been working with drummer Ryan Ham since around 2012. The band has been enjoying the addition of bassist Chris Hull later this year.
Earlier this year the group worked with Josh Antonuccio of 3 Elliott Studio to craft Demagogues and Despots, a 13-track record that swings from the contemplative “Way to Go” (which features some guitar work not unlike Peter Buck’s ala Monster-era R.E.M.,) to the sonically intense album closer “The Twin Terrors of Terrell and Terrace.”
WOUB’s Emily Votaw spoke to Horvath and Ham in studio about the recording of their latest, finding band members on Craigslist, and most importantly about the band’s upcoming performances on Thursday, December 6 at Casa Cantina and on Saturday, December 8 at Donkey Coffee.
