COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) – State officials say hunters checked more than 4,000 fewer white-tailed deer during Ohio’s two-day deer-gun hunting season this year than in last year’s two-day season.

The Ohio Department of Natural Resources says hunters killed 9,625 deer in the two-day period Dec. 15-16, compared with 14,115 last year.

Officials say hunters still have opportunities to pursue deer this winter during the Jan. 5-Jan. 8 muzzleloader season and the archery season. The archery season remains open through Sunday, Feb. 3.

Ohio resident hunters can purchase multiyear and lifetime licenses at wildohio.gov and at participating agents across the state.

All money generated from the sale of multiyear and lifetime licenses is deposited into the Wildlife Fund. State officials say that money is used to protect and enhance Ohio’s wildlife populations.
