< < Back to marshall-university-building-to-keep-confederate-nameHUNTINGTON, W.Va. (AP) – A building at Marshall University will retain its name after a Confederate Army general.
The Marshall Board of Governors on Thursday voted to keep the building as Jenkins Hall, named after Marshall Academy graduate Albert Gallatin Jenkins. The announcement came after a committee evaluated the names of every building on campus.
The university says in a news release a display will be installed inside Jenkins Hall denouncing bigotry, prejudice and discrimination and reaffirming the university’s commitment to diversity and inclusion.
The group Students for Democratic Society had sought to rename Jenkins Hall, which houses the College of Education and Professional Development.
