This Week On Radio Free Athens: July 13, 2019
< < Back to this-week-on-radio-free-athens-july-13-2019Every weekend local music geeks unite to provide the region with 11 hours of creatively curated tunes on WOUB 1340AM, an endeavor that is known commonly as Radio Free Athens! Typically the program runs from 9 a.m. EST to 8 p.m. EST every Saturday, and can also be heard through this link.
Here is a list of the DJs slated to play on Saturday, July 13:
9 a.m. to 12 p.m. – DJ Grumpy Grandma
12 p.m. to 3 p.m. – R@T
3 p.m. to 6 p.m. – Michael T.
6 p.m. to 8 p.m. – Adam
From DJ Grumpy Grandma, 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. EDT
I’m a producer for WOUB’s Gladden House Sessions, which were filmed at the 2019 Nelsonville Music Festival and feature select acts from the festival giving interviews to my colleague Josh Antonuccio and performing stripped down versions of their tunes — and this involves watching these performances over and over again as we go through the editing process! Some acts hold up, some don’t, but one that certainly did was The National Reserve, a rollicking, friendly “Americana” band hailing from NYC that has a sort of “residency” at Skinny Dennis is Brooklyn. We released this episode last week, and I’ve been obsessing over their Motel La Grange record and over the effortless coolness of lead singer Sean Walsh recently — in fact, he provided my patented “cool musician picture” for the most recent header of the WOUB Culture Twitter.
9 a.m. to 12 p.m. I’ll be serving up all my favorite tunes, including a few by The National Reserve!
From R@T, 12 p.m. to 3 p.m. EDT
Unfortunately this week I have to start the show with a couple of songs that I love but hate to play. (“I Am Not Afraid to Die” by Gillian Welch and “Bye Bye Blackbird” by Joe Cocker.) We lost another friend this week in my world which has lead to some introspection. Ending relationships is rarely easy. The show this week will reflect it.
I also had a conversation recently about how great a guitar player Johnny Marr is so some Smiths and Modest Mouse will be on tap. Which reminds me that Friday is the beginning of Brew Week. Songs about beer? Of course. Join me at noon.
