Rubber Duck Derby Goes Swimmingly
< < Back to rubber-duck-derby-goes-swimminglyATHENS, Ohio (WOUB) –Athens Food Rescue held its annual Rubber Duck Derby and Family Fun Olympics over the weekend to raise money for their non-profit.
Donors to the fundraiser can “Adopt a Duck” to race down the Hocking River and compete for first, second and third place prizes like free admission to the Columbus Zoo or dinner at Salaam, for example.
However, the river was a little too high and murky for the race, so volunteers dumped the ducks in a blow-up pool instead.
Families attending the event also competed against each other in the Family Fun Olympics for gold, silver and bronze medals.
Teresa Curtiss, the founder and director of the group, said she founded the group four years ago after donating to the Salvation Army.
“I wanted to volunteer somewhere, and I had been giving food to the Salvation Army food pantry and saw there was more of a need than there was food to give to people coming in,” Curtiss said.
AFR Board Member Adele Hanson said the group has collected over 100,000 pounds of food in the past four years.
The group collects leftover food from donors like Kroger, Brenen’s Coffee Cafe, Athens Bread Company and more local businesses.
