Twillaby Pond is local author Patricia Black’s work of illustrated lyrical poetry inspired by the work of respected Irish poet Seamus Heaney. The lilting work is rife with imagery of fantastical creatures – the myrties and water-blue prets, and although the work has ultimately been published as a children’s book by Monday Creek Publishing, Black wrote it because she “liked the sounds in it.”

“It’s a children’s book, but I did not write the poem as a children’s poem,” Black said in an interview with WOUB, which you can hear embedded above. “When you get a book that your child really likes, they want you to read it to them (frequently) and eventually you kind of memorize it and you can rattle it off while you’re thinking about what you’re going to do for supper or whatever. Rhythm and rhyme create memory, so maybe it will be good in that respect.”

Local poet and author Patricia Black’s Twillaby Pond, which is an illustrated poem, will have a book launch event at the Athens County Public Library (30 Home Street, Athens) on Saturday, November 16 starting at 2 p.m.

Black emphasized that she is very open to giving readings of the poem for interested listeners, and that she can be contacted by her phone number, 740-594-3024 or by email at plhb222@hotmail.com.
