Beyond the Surface
November 10, 2020 @ 12:00 pm - November 29, 2020 @ 5:00 pm
FreeAthens Photographic Project (APP) proudly presents, Beyond the Surface, featuring new work from artists who participated in APP’s 2018-2020 photography classes. Join us at the Dairy Barn Arts Center to view the exhibition in person, with COVID-19 precautions in place. Beyond the Surface is shown in conjunction with Dairy Barn’s second biennial WideOpen photo exhibition. Admission is provided at no cost. Exhibition Jurors: Sue Morrow and Michael Rondou.
APP invites you to join us in a temporary space of art, expression and connection, where you will find photographic and mixed media artwork created before the current pandemic. Whether you visit the online or in person gallery, you most likely will agree, the vision of APP Artists has become even more relevant and necessary at this time of collective questioning and change.
Athens Photo Project is a community of artists dedicated to using photography as a tool for self-expression, personal growth and social change. APP was founded in 2000 by photographer and mental health advocate Elise Sanford in response to the marginalization and stigma she felt followed individuals into the community after the deinstitutionalization of state hospitals such as the Athens Mental Health Center (previously known as the Athens Asylum).
APP programs and exhibitions are produced in collaboration with many community partners, sponsors, and individual supporters, including 317 Board, Hopewell Health Centers, Ohio Arts Council, The Dairy Barn Art Center and National Endowment for the Arts.
Books, prints, and cards are available at APP’s Virtual Gallery throughout the exhibit. Visit us online to celebrate the work of our regional artists and to support mental health through the arts!
