Thanks to a strong passing game and a big defensive outing, the Rough Riders rode their way to the state semifinals, beating the Cadets 16-14.
West Jefferson quarterback Tyler Buescher lead the way offensively, completing 64 percent of his passes for 330 yards and a touchdown.
A key target for Buescher was MJ Book who had 12 receptions for 198 yards and a 30 yard touchdown to give the Rough Riders a 13-7 lead late in the first half.
The West Jefferson defense also stepped up in a major way.
“We are playing at a high level right now defensively,” head coach Steve Buescher said “To play the way we did tonight against that group, I mean they are so well coached and got so many great players…to play that well defensively, I am proud of our defensive staff and I am proud of our kids.”
With one minute left in the first half, Ian Ellis lead the Cadets down the field to the goal line. But the Rough Riders’ defense would step up and force a fumble to secure the lead heading into the break.
After halftime, neither offense was able to find the end zone. That’s when Maeson Long would intercept Buescher and take it about 35 yards to the end zone to give Fort Frye the lead.
West Jefferson retook the lead thanks to a 27-yard field goal from Mason Cordetti in the fourth quarter.
With two minutes left in the game, the Cadets found themselves with the ball on their own 22-yard line. Ellis led the team all the way to the Rough Rider 30 yard line but was unable to connect with Braxton Brown resulting in a turnover and giving West Jefferson the victory.
With this win the West Jefferson Rough Riders will take on Coldwater in the division six final four.
