Unioto holds onto undefeated streak with win over Piketon
< < Back toPIKETON, Ohio (WOUB) — The Unioto Shermans took down the Piketon Redstreaks 36-6 Friday night.
The Shermans were able to use both the run and the passing game effectively on the first drive then QB Newton Hoops was able to find receiver Maddox Fox for an 18-yard touchdown to make the score 7-0.
The Shermans were able to force a quick 3 and out as the Redstreaks were without starting QB Alan Austin due to an injury in their last game so for the night it was junior Brent McGuire and Luke Gullion rotating snaps at Quarterback.
Back on offense, the Sherman offense scored again as Newton Hoops connected to Maddox Fox for a 53-yard touchdown to make the score 14-0. The Redstreaks were not able to find the endzone in the 1st quarter.
Right off the bat in the second quarter Newton Hoops was able to find his receiver yet again Maddox Fox for a 36-yard touchdown to make the score 21-0. Piketon on the next drive was able to run the ball effectively with lead Running back Buddy Wilson but right as the Redstreaks looked as if they were going to score but turned the ball over on downs.
The Shermans were able to capitalize on this with a 90-yard rushing touchdown from Matt Griffin. Newton Hoops then rushed for a 2-point conversion to make the score 29-0.
On the next drive, the Redstreaks were able to put a drive together but then deep in the red zone, they fumbled the ball. The score at halftime was 29-0.
The Sherman’s defense continued its dominance as Cornerback Isiah Cunningham intercepted Luke Gullion. The Shermans were able to capitalize on this with an 11-yard touchdown run from Corbin Demint making the score 36-0.
On the next drive desperate to score a touchdown The Redstreaks were able to get a big play as Luke Gullion connected with Wayde Fout on a long pass to put them on the 6-yard line.
Then Running back Caleb Osborne found the endzone on a 5-yard rush. Piketon failed the 2-point conversion, the score 36-6.
With under a minute left in the 3rd quarter, the Redstreaks were able to intercept Newton Hoops but couldn’t score off this turnover.
Neither team was able to score for the remainder of the game making the final score 36-6.
Shermans Quarterback Newton Hoops ended 9/13 for 142 yards and three touchdowns. Running back Matt Griffin had a field day as he ran for 141 yards on just 5 carriers and 1 touchdown. Receiver Maddox Fox had 4 receptions for 117 yards and 3 touchdowns.
For the Redstreaks, Luke Gullion finished 12/18 for 192 yards and 1 interception.
Buddy Wilson had a productive day on the ground with 18 carriers for 86 yards.
Wayde Fout led the Redstreaks in receiving with 4 receptions for 109 yards.
Piketon (2-3, 0-2 in conference) will look to bounce back as they will play at Paint Valley next week.
Unioto (5-0, 2-0 in conference) will play Adena at home next Friday as they look to continue their undefeated season.p
