Two COVID-related deaths have been reported in Athens County, along with 51 new cases for Oct. 14-20

ATHENS, Ohio (WOUB) — Athens County has now had 154 total deaths related to COVID-19 since the beginning of the pandemic after two were added to the total Thursday. The county also has now had had 18,636 total cases of COVID-19 since the beginning of the pandemic after 51 additional cases were reported since last week’s update.
The Ohio Department of Health confirmed the numbers on Oct. 20, 2022.
Analysis of ODH data indicates the deaths involved a person in their 60s and a person 80 or older.
The cases involved 13 people 50-59, nine people 20-29, nine people 30-39, six people 0-19, five people 40-49, four people 60-69, three people 80+ and two people 70-79.
There are 150 known active cases in the county as of Thursday and 18,332 recovered cases, according to ODH.
A total of 53.67% of the county has started the vaccination process and 50% has completed it, according to ODH. There have also been 18,629 first boosters and 6,616 second boosters and 4,302 updated boosters administered.
Anyone experiencing respiratory symptoms is asked to call their primary care physician, urgent care, or emergency department before arriving for care to let them know that they believe they are experiencing symptoms related to COVID-19 virus.
ODH makes the following recommendations to protect yourself from illness:
- Wash hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds; dry hands with a clean towel or air dry hands.
- Use alcohol-based hand sanitizer when soap and water are unavailable.
- Cover your mouth with a tissue or sleeve when sneezing or coughing. Avoid touching your eyes, nose, or mouth with unwashed hands.
- Stay home when you are sick.
- Avoid contact with people who are sick.
