Nelsonville-York Lady Buckeyes fall to Wheelersburg Pirates in District Finals

Wellston, Ohio (WOUB)- The Nelsonville-York Buckeyes faced off against the Wheelersburg Pirates Saturday afternoon in the District Final.. The winner of this game becomes the District Champion in the OHSAA tournament and advances to the regional semifinals.
The Buckeyes started off strong with a 3-2 lead, but would not last long, as they didn’t score again in the first 16 minutes. This would be Nelsonville-York’s only lead for the rest of the game.
The first half would end with Wheelersburg leading 26-3. The only points scored by the Buckeyes in the first half were from number 20 Junior Aira Lavy.
With the start of the second half underway, Nelsonville-York would start to gain momentum, scoring 14 points in the third quarter. But in the end, it would not be enough for the Lady Buckeyes. The Pirates would send them home with a score of 51-31.
The biggest weakness for Nelsonville-York was the speed from the Pirates. The Buckeyes could not keep up and it showed from the beginning.. Whith Wheelersburg’s deep bench of a 10-man rotation, the Buckeyes 7-man squad did not have the endurance to hold the Pirates. This kept Wheelersburg fresh, which was clearly showing on the court.
The leading spotlight for Nelsonville-York was Ara Lavy who had 18 points. She was a big contributor to the momentum change that the Buckeyes had in the 3rd quarter.
