September is a splendiferous month of Jazz “arrival-dates (nee birthdays)-
From the twin tenor saxophone towers of Newk & Trane (Sonny Rollins 9/7 and John Coltrane 9/23); to the composer of eternal Jazz melodies, Horace Silver, and spontaneous lyricist Jon Hendricks. From the Janus-styles of alto raconteurs Julian Adderley/John Zorn; to bassists Wilbur Ware, Butch Warren, Oscar Pettiford, Slam Stewart, Tommy Potter, and Red Mitchell. The drum’s history: Chico Hamilton-Elvin Jones-Sunny Murray-Steve McCall, Chas. Moffett; Bud, and his brother Richie Powell. The only artist to have performed with Fletcher Henderson/ Fats Waller, and John Coltrane/ Gil Evans, Garvin Bushell. A clarinet section of John Carter/Perry Robinson. A sax section of Frank Foster, John Gilmore, Prince Lasha, Gary Bartz, and the explorer of baritone sax-sonics Hamiet Bluiett. Not to forget Oliver Lake/Joseph Jarman, both born on the same day (9/14)!
And still the list goes on & on… So, tune into both Saturdays in September (9-9/9-23) for much more, as both “Excursions” shows will be devoted to Jazz’s “Septemberly” gifts.
