Lady Buckeyes triumph over Meigs in record-breaking night

BUTCHEL, Ohio (WOUB) — Thursday night the Lady Buckeyes hosted the Meigs Lady Marauders in a TVC-Ohio battle. Coming into the game, NY sat right at .500 looking to get a win against a struggling Meigs team. With a historic night from senior guard Airah Lavy, the Lady Buckeyes came out on top against the Lady Marauders.
The first quarter was a defensive battle for NY and Meigs, making it a struggle for each team to find the bottom of the net. Despite the lack of offense, junior Alayna Okulich had three blocks which gave the Lady Buckeyes a 10-6 lead.
With defense being the name of the game in the first, the second was a different story. Nelsonville-York would continue to build its lead to start the second quarter. Meigs, however, would not go away that easily as they would go basket for basket against the Lady Buckeyes. With the late push from the Lady Marauders, it was not enough as NY would lead 23-21 at the break.
The third quarter was all Airah Lavy for the Lady Buckeyes, as she caught fire from all over the court. Lavy would score 13 points for NY giving them the momentum. At the end of the third quarter Airah would find herself four points from history and giving them the 40-34 lead.
On the verge of history, Lavy would sink a three in the fourth to write her name in the record books. Lavy became the all-time leading scorer in Nelsonville-York basketball history with 1,534 points and counting. This gave NY the momentum in the game as they would cruise past the Meigs in the fourth. Lavy would finish with 30 points and would get the win over Meigs 58-45.
This is an amazing accomplishment for Airah Lavy as she sits atop the record books in Nelsonville-York High School. Here are some words Lavy had to say after her amazing accomplishment, “… very happy I got it on my home court. Definitely good for all my family and friends to be here. And, you know, I couldn’t be here without my team.”
