Rockets come out firing against Oaks
< < Back to ?p=331425OAK HILL, Ohio (WOUB) — The Wellston Golden Rockets traveled to Oak Hill to take on the Oaks in week one of high school football play. After a hard fought matchup between these two teams last year featuring a 12-9 Wellston win, the tenacity carried over, with penalties being almost as common as first downs in this year’s edition.
After an offensively quiet first quarter, the scoring started in the second with a seven yard touchdown pass from Johnny Scott to Kale Faught, giving the Golden Rockets the 7-0 advantage halfway through the quarter. Oak Hill would follow that score with a touchdown of their own, where Eddie Abele ran his way around the Wellston defense and found Andy Meldick in the endzone to tie the game at seven before halftime.
After the break, the Wellston defense would make their mark on the scoreboard, Hunter Collins tearing his way through the offensive line and snagging Abele in the endzone for the safety. This made it 9-7 early in the third and Wellston wouldn’t stop there, Johnny Scott punching in a one yard touchdown run to extend their lead to 15-7 nearing the fourth.
The first and fourth quarters were very similar, with both teams being held scoreless in a defense heavy matchup where the Rockets came out on top, 15-7.
The Oak Hill Oaks will look to bounce back next week in a non conference matchup against Fairfield Christian.
After their week one win, the Wellston Golden Rockets will look to make it back to back wins next week against Piketon.
